Living In The Desert

Introduction:

This country is primarily a desert, but Jordanians also grow olive trees and some other agriculture. Animal agriculture is very important to their lifestyle as well.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Most other Middle Eastern nations have mountains, rivers and forests, but not in Jordan. Jordan has desert as far as the eye can see. The word for desert in Arabic is sahara.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The desert is a good environment for animal agriculture. People have been wandering with their flocks of animals here for thousands of years.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The people here fear that there will be no water in the coming years. Because so many refugees have moved here recently, there is not enough water or resources to last long.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Jordan imports a lot of food items from neighboring countries. They also rely on financial aid from the international community, especially from the U.S. Jordanians are very good at saving their water by taking short showers, drinking less water and not using sprinklers or water fountains.
