Jordan's Unique Resource: Tourism

Introduction:

Do you know what the word "tourism" means?

A "tourist" is someone who goes to another place to see and experience what the other place has to offer. I am a tourist when I travel to parts of Jordan to see the historic sites and then I leave with lots of pictures and memories. Tourists often spend money on lodging, food, transportation and shopping. The money that they spend is very good for the economy of the place that they visit. "Tourism" is the word that we use to describe this activity.

What community need did I learn about?:

People have been living in the lands in and around Jordan since ancient times. There are so many ancient sites here that historians and scientists have discovered, and people come from all over the world to see these ancient sites and ruins. Jordan really relies on tourism to generate money in the local communities. Many Jordanians work as drivers or tour guides to show visitors the wonderful sites in their country.

Why does the community have this need?:

Do you know what the word "resources" means? It describes the natural products that an area produces. In California, where I am from, we grow many fruits and nuts and we sell them. Having a resource like fruit or nuts really helps our economy.
