Transportation Challenges Around Jordan

Introduction:

The rules of the road in Jordan are very different than in America. The streets are always very crowded and cars all drive very fast. Sometimes the streets can get scary. I prefer to take the bus to school every day because it is the cheapest option, but taxis and Uber are also always available.

How do people get around?:

Many people have cars in the city, but they prefer to take taxis or the bus because the streets get so crowded. The bus only costs 40 quirsh, which is about 56 U.S. cents. There is no bus schedule or official bus stops; if you want to take a bus, you wave to one in the street and they pull over for you. Then, you tell them when you want to get off. Taxis are also easy to wave down, but telling a taxi where you want to go can be more difficult.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I felt nervous when I first began taking the bus here because the drivers do not usually speak any English, and I was not sure where I was supposed to get off. Now that I know where I want to stop and my Arabic is improving, I feel much more comfortable. Taxis can also be difficult when their drivers don't speak any English, but there is usually a way to communicate where I want to go. I'm hoping that this will continue to get easier over time.
