A Honk, a Ding and a Song to Sing!

In the early morning or late at night, panaderos (bakers) ride around the neighborhood, selling their tasty treats on a bicycle with a glass box attached in front to hold all the goods.
  • “Zeta, Zeta, Zeta Gas” sings a high-pitched voice as light piano music plays in the background. We need this service to start our stoves and heat our water… it’s the gas truck! In the morning, these trucks ride slowly around the streets, stopping at houses and apartments to refill gas and keep us running.
  • “¡Bien frío… *crackling* …congelados, refrescantes!” The sound of a voice over a loud speaker booms from the back of a cart as it is pushed down the street, selling something that is perfect to drink when you need to cool off. They are selling ice-cold juices! These small carts roll through neighborhoods selling tasty beverages as well as many other small items such as candy, toys and sandwiches.
  • “Screeeeechhhh… AGUAAA!” This big truck comes to a quick stop at the end of the block as the driver pops his head out to announce to the neighborhood that we have… water! These big ten-wheeled trucks pass heavily down the street, carrying dozens of jugs of fresh water right to your door.
  • Why does the community have this need?:

The water (agua) that runs in our sinks and showers is perfect to use to wash ourselves and clean up, but it is not always the best to drink. Sometimes as water is getting sent to individual houses from the main plant where it is cleaned and treated, it can get mixed with pollutants along the way, and if we drink it, might make us sick.
