From Here to There and Back Again!

Introduction:

To begin, it is important to remember just how big México is. The country is connected at the top to the United States from the coast of California all the way across to the tip of Texas (around 2,000 miles). The state then drops down towards South America another 1,600 miles, which is about the length of driving from NYC to Chicago and back! The country has 32 states, and the capital of the country, México City (the Federal District), has over 21,000,000 people. Unless you really, really like to walk and have a lot of time, the most common way to travel around the country is by plane, but once you get to specific states and areas of México, travel habits change for shorter journeys.

How do people get around?:

I am staying on the Yucatán Peninsula, which is down at the most southern tip of México. I am a neighbor to Belize and only a short boat ride away from Cuba! In Chetumal, the most common type of transportation is done with four wheels and a motor. Similar to the United States (and especially New York), many people in Chetumal get around in cars of their own, or by taxi. It is very easy to hail a cab on the street, and a basic ride around the city only costs $25 MX pesos, or $1.25. The cabs are always small, four-person white cars with a yellow stripe, so they are easy to spot!
