"Is there, like, public transportation there?"

Introduction:

An American friend recently asked me, "Is there, like, public transportation there?", meaning "is there public transportation in Uruguay?" Although the question makes me laugh and seems a bit ridiculous, I recognize it comes from a genuine place of curiosity. So let's talk about it; not many people know about Uruguay! You all may be learning about a country right now that most of the people in your life know nothing about!

How do people get around?:

In Montevideo, the capital city, there's transportation just like anywhere else: buses, cars, bikes, taxis, even Uber and Cabify. There isn't however, a subway system here, unlike the one you saw and read a lot about in my field note on Buenos Aires :)

Pop quiz: Buenos Aires is the capital of what country?

But in the interior of Uruguay (AKA everywhere else but Montevideo...) public transportation is constricted to less-than-dependable buses and personal cars. For example, in Fray Bentos, there was one bus that probably never came. I don't remember seeing it (hehehe). But by now, you all know how much I love to walk. The town is somewhat small, so I ended up walking most of the time, sometimes for an hour or more.

However, I must mention that the bus companies that travel in between towns and cities are pretty dependable.
