"Environment" is a Complex Word for Uruguay

Introduction:

Uruguay has a unique social environment. In terms of its architecture, society and history, the country is a fascinating place to live in  and to learn about another culture. While living here, I have been shown both the strengths and the challenges of this small but significant country.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Uruguay is one special gem of a country: It was created as a buffer zone between two influential (and often warring) territories, Brazil and Argentina. This rationale for the creation of Uruguay continues to influence the country. Uruguay is known internationally for its progressive politics and regionally for the warmth of its people. The country also attracted immigrants from Italy and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, who influenced the culture. For example, it is common to find pizza and pasta, here; much of the architecture looks like it was influenced from the pictures you see of cities in France; and people express themselves with hand gestures that remind you of the elderly Italian man who owns the pizzería you went to as a kid.

So, imagine everything I wrote about existing in one place: What does this place look like to you? I tried to paint it with words as well as I could.
