Market Season in Germany

Introduction:

The other day it was very sunny, so I took a walk around the city and discovered that there was a Handwerkmarkt (hand-verk markt) or craft market in the city center. There are normally a few vendors selling goods in the market area on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I had never noticed a market this big. As a result, I was curious to know more about markets in Greifswald. Here's what I found out.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Market season in Greifswald (and all over Germany) begins in Spring. Once the weather is nice, vendors can open stalls and sell their products. Products range from fresh produce to wooden cooking utensils to clothing or other homegoods. Although markets are popular everywhere, including in the United States, the market in Greifswald is a particularly interesting one. This has largely to do with the fct that it has some historical origins which a fellow teacher explained to me.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The market in Greifswald takes place in the Markt (literally, market). This is also the historical center of the city, which shows how important the market has been to the growth of Greifswald. The market space has historically been a place of trading and shopping, but it has also been an area for gathering and creating community.
