Greifswald is located on the Ryck River and close to the Baltic Sea. Historically one of the biggest contributers to the market were local fishermen selling fresh fish in the early hours of the morning. There is another market near the one in the center of the city which is called the Fischmakt (fish market). Maybe there were too many fishermen in the original market that they had to move them all to their own market! I love trying to figure out the origins of traditions like these that are all around me in Greifswald!
