A Greener Germany

Introduction:

Trash collection and recycling in Germany is a complicated process. However, all of this hard, unglamorous work is really good for the environment. Here trash and recycling are more carefully separated than they are in the United States; and most of this sorting is done at home. This means more work for the householder (me!), but I am happy to put in this time because I know I am helping the environment.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about how the process for dealing with trash and recycling in Germany is different to that generally used in the United States.

Why does the community have this need?:

The German government is very aware of the impact personal habits have on the environment. When politicians realized that there was too much trash being produced, they knew it had to do something about this problem. Previously, most of the trash had ended up in landfills, and these were quickly running filling up! Realizing that this practicw was neither an environmentally friendly nor sustainable practice, the government brainstormed innovative ways to dispose of the waste.

Is this need being met? How?:

Yes, this need is being met and Germans are doing a really good job at limiting the amount of waste going into landfills versus how much is recycled!
