Wild Brazilian Capybaras

Introduction:

Last week, my program took a trip to Ilha de Anhatomirim, a small island off the coast of southern Brazil. Ilha de Anhatomirim is most famous for its communities of wild capybaras! They are pretty friendly, and very cute! We were able to get close to them for photos.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Capybaras kind of look like large rats! In fact, I am pretty sure that they are the largest rodents in the world.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

It felt quite special. I've seen capybaras the the Saint Louis Zoo before, but never in the wild.

Where does it live?:

Capybaras are native to Brazil, but also live in most other countries of South America (with the exception of Chile).

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Capybaras typically live in herds of 10-30, which helps them to collectively fight off danger. They are semi-aquatic mammals, which makes them quite unique in the animal kingdom. They can head into the water or onto land when they need to. Because they are herbivores, they must survive on vegetation and whatever they are able to find in their habitats.
