Festa Junina - Winter's Biggest Celebration

Introduction:

Festa Junina reminds me of your typical county or state fair back in the US. Festa Juninas typically have live folk music, forró dancing, and carnival foods such as hot dogs, cotton candy, and corn on the cob. They are family-friendly events for families to come together and celebrate a time of thanks and being together.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Festa Junina is the general name for the celebrations between the months of June and July that originally celebrate the Catholic saints known as Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Peter. Today, however, the events have lost some of their religious importance and are no longer very religious.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Festa Junina is now a modern, fun way for Brazilians to come together and have fun, give thanks, and indulge in Brazilian sweets and treats. Brazilians like to dress up in traditonal clothing from the northeast of Brazil like plaid shirts, patched jeans, and straw hats.
