Fried cake?

I suppose that an influential community member somewhere in the country just started the tradition; Uruguay is small enough (the country only has 3.25 million people, less than half of what the island of Manhattan has) for one idea to catch on.

This may also be the origin of another strangely-specific food tradition: Here in Uruguay, we eating ñoqui, or gnocchi (a type of pasta-dumpling) – but especially on the 29th day of each month. Funny, right?

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

When reading about the history of torta frita, I came across a legend: That when it rained, the gauchos (this region's version of the cowboy) would collect it to use in the dough for torta frita. I'm not sure if it's true, but at the same time, I don't care; it's a cool story!
