The Festival of Saint Martin

Introduction:

On the 11th of November each year, the town of Moreda in the Aller Valley is filled with people. These people are dressed in traditional Asturian clothing playing bagpipes, dancing and celebrating with their friends and family. On this day, you will find both young children and very old people dancing, singing and eating together. The celebration starts early in the morning and lasts until late at night. It begins with live music in the town center. This is followed by a special mass held in the church and a parade through the city. The citizens take a break in the middle of the day to eat a traditional meal with their friends and family.  People here consider meals to be an important time to spend with loved ones and not simply a time to eat. This meal can, therefore, last for hours. After the meal, there is music and traditional dancing until late. The celebration officially ends with fireworks at night.

What tradition did I learn about?:

The celebration of Saint Martin or el festival de San Martin. This is a celebration held in the town of Moreda in the Aller Valley. None of the children go to school on this day and most adults do not have to work, either. The only people who work on this day are the people who work in bars or restaurants.
