Cachopo

Introduction:

Cachopo is one of the most popular dishes in Asturias. It is delicious and a great way to experience the culture and enjoy with friends. However, it is definitely not something for vegetarians!

What food did I try?:

I tried cachopo, a food that is very typical of Asturias. It is usually served with french fries and veggies and is meant to be shared.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was nervous to try it because I had never seen anything like it before! However, cachopo is made to be shared with a friend, so I didn't have to try it alone. My friend, Connor and I shared a cachopo and the french fries, or papas fritas, that come with it the first weeked that we were in Oviedo. It was delicious, and we got to experience the tradition of sharing food. There are many Spanish dishes that are meant to be shared. This is another example of the importance of community here in Spain. Most meals consist of sharing food and talking with friends and family for hours instead of eating quickly to get back to what you were doing before, like in the United States.

How is the food prepared?:

Cachopo is two large veal (calf) fillets, with ham and cheese in the middle. Then it is coated in breadcrumbs and fried. People say that if a cachopo is made correctly it should be bigger than the plate it is served on!
