Ich habe Hunger! I am hungry!

Hamburgers here are fun because they show a coming together of German and American cultures. When Germans immigrated to the U.S.A. from Hamburg, they brought hamburger steak with them, which was seasoned meat cut into small pieces and formed into patties. Then someone somewhere in the U.S. decided to put patty between two pieces of bread, and now we have hamburgers everywhere!

One of my favorite foods in Germany that I want to tell you more about comes from Turkish immigrants and can be found all over the country. It's called döner (doe-ner) or kebab. I haven't been able to find anything like it in the United States! What goes into döner depends on where you get it. It's usually roasted meat with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a special yogurt sauce. This is all wrapped in a tortilla or eaten with pita bread. You can even get döner  with pepper flakes if you want it more spicy! This is the traditional way of eating this dish, and it makes for a really easy snack or meal when you're out walking around. You can also buy döner with sides on a plate or get it in a to-go box with french fries. Let me tell you more about it!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I always feel so full after I eat döner! It's one of my favorite meals because it is not very expensive, but I always feel like I've had a lot to eat. Döner is very tasty and satisfying because it has the filling qualities of the meat and pita, but it has fresh flavors like vegetables and yogurt sauce. I will miss döner when return to the United States.
