Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

Spanish (jerga rioplatense). What I mean by jerga rioplatense is that the jargon, or jerga, is from the River Plate region (rioplatense). The River Plate is the body of water situated to the south of Uruguay. Why do I distinguish the jargon, or type of Spanish that is spoken here? Even though most countries in Latin America speak Spanish, each group of speakers has distinct language features. For example, in Uruguay and Argentina it’s common to call a strawberry frutilla, whereas in Mexico it’s more common to call it fresa.

What type of money is used here?:

Uruguayan pesos and US dollars.

Right now, 1 US dollar = 34 Uruguayan pesos.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

About 30 Uruguayan pesos, at least in this small town. It's probably more expensive in Montevideo, the capital.

What was the best meal this week?:

Ooooh! On Friday, a few friends and I made pizzas caseras, or homemade pizzas, and this was just the perfect way to satisfy my craving for both human and comfort food warmth! Much of the food here is influenced by Italian immigrants.

What music did I listen to this week?:

I've been listening to both music from the States and from Uruguay and throughout Latin America.
