Our News

"LatAm music" is an umbrella term, encompassing genres such as cumbia, merengue, bossa nova, tango and more. My current favorite song for practicing is "La Promesa" by Bonanza.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

I visited a butterfly sanctuary in Mindo! It was so beautiful. I will tell you all about it in my nature field note.

What did I read this week?:

I've been working my way through a Spanish version of Grimm's fairytales. I already knew some of them, which helps me practice my reading comprehension in my second language. It takes effort, and it can be frustrating when I read more slowly than other people, but it is worth it to practice.

What games or sports did I play this week?:

This week I learned a card game called cuarenta (translation: 40) which is a beloved pastime here. It's a big part of the celebrations for Fiestas de Quito next month, so I've been practicing almost every day. Fun fact... when you play cuareta, you don't use jokers, eights, nines or tens.

Other news from this week:

On Sunday, November 16th, Ecuadorians will be voting on whether or not to change parts of the country's constitution. This does not happen regularly, so I am very privileged to be here to watch a moment in history.
