The Opal Card That Can Get You (Almost) Anywhere

However, some people may prefer the bus if they only have a short distance to travel and there's not too much traffic on the roads. Even though the metro trains come fairly frequently (every 10-15 minutes) the bus can be a quicker option at certain times of the day. If I am planning to go to one of the many beaches around Sydney I usually take the bus and then a ferry. Overall, Sydney is blessed with many transit options that allow you to get around the city quickly without having to own a car or take a cab.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I have to admit that I was initially very nervous about taking the train and metro. My first memories of taking the train are from when I was a lot younger, taking the train from Florida to New York in the winter, which was a very long train ride. The huge crowds of people at the station when I arrived in New York were also overwhelming and made me extremely anxious that riding the train system in Sydney would be a similar experience.

However, I could not have been more wrong as the transit system in Sydney is much less crowded owing to the simple fact that trains are more regular and the population in Sydney is about half the size of that in New York! When I first took the ferry it felt like I was going on a mini cruise which allowed me to see more of Sydney and from a very different viewpoint.

The trickest transportation for me is the bus because the stops a bus takes can vary depending on the time of day, which can make it very confusing to navigate, especially since the bus drivers will often not annouce the next stop (like in Florida!). In other words, when riding the bus in Sydney you need to pay keen attention or you might miss your stop.
