Guardians of the Trains

Introduction:

The metro and train systems in Sydney represent a very complex and vital lifeline. They connect suburbs that are far away and make them seem very close. They allow people the freedom to get around at their own pace using convenient tools like Opal cards. Because so many people rely on public transportation, it's critically important that everything is running smoothly. In addition to the engineers and construction workers who maintain the tracks and stations, there are always custodians around to help make sure that passengers follow the rules and have an enjoyable transit experience.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about the custodians that ensure that the train and metro systems are clean, efficient (running on time) and safe. They make sure that passengers are following the proper procedures and help people when they need assistance.

Why does the community have this need?:

The custodians ensure the safety of riders, they keep the trains and metros running on time, and they can react quickly to help resolve any problems that occur on a train or at a station. They are also a friendly face that can and will help individuals who are lost or in need of additional assistance. They keep things running smoothly.

Is this need being met? How?:

There are about five custodians at every station, and usually two on each train.
