Vegemite Goes Better With Toast and Butter

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When I tried vegemite for the first time I truly thought it was going to be a life changing experience given how many of my Australian friends love it and were excited for me to try it. If you ask a room full of people what they think about vegemite, you'll probably find half of them absolutely love it and the other half hate it! I have to admit that I was not sure if I liked or disliked the taste, but it was absolutely an experience that I will remember.

Truth be told, I have never been too adventurous when it comes to food. I've been a picky eater from a young age. But I do realize that part of the joy of being in a new country is trying new things and as such I've had to challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone and try some of the local foods. After all, can they really be that bad if they are enjoyed by so many people? And in that light I am proud to say that I did give vegemite a second chance by spreading it on buttered bread, just the way it was meant to be eaten.

How is the food prepared?:

Vegemite is a thick, black food spread made from brewers' yeast and various other natural flavors. The taste is hard to describe, but I would say it has a salty, malty flavor. It's most often eaten as a spread on buttered toast, but Australians have been known to spread it on many different types sandwiches or even just use it as a food flavoring in foods as varied as soups and potato chips.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Vegemite is connected to the local environment in the sense that it is arguably the most famous Australian food.
