Getting Around in Thailand

It is very common for people to weave in and out of traffic on their motorbikes, which is very interesting to watch! Motorbikes are so common that there are special parking lots for them that have smaller spaces than those that a car can fit in.

2) Songthaews. As I wrote above, songthaews are like taxis. They drive around and if you wave it down and tell the driver where you'd like to go, the driver will take you there. Sometimes, they will pick up other people on the way. It's a very interesting way to see other people. Songthaews are all over cities like Chiang Mai, but not as common in smaller towns or villages. With songthaews, you have to stay in a given area. For example, you couldn't take a songthaew from Vancouver to the beach - you would probably have to find a car or bus for that.

3) Tuk-tuks. Tuk-tuks are also like a taxi service. They are like a taxi on a motorbike. There will be a photo here so that you can understand it better. Like songthaews, you wave down a driver, then tell them where you want to go. Then, they will take you there. Tuk-tuks can only have 1 - 3 passengers, so the driver will not pick up other people like songthaews will. Also, because tuk-tuks are smaller and less powerful than cars, you cannot take tuk-tuks on the highway. They are best for traveling to two different places closer together.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I never rode a motorbike, but I did get to ride songthaews and tuk-tuks often.
