Ugandan Transportation

Introduction:

Uganda is roughly the size of Oregon and has a population of 45 million people. This makes the country very busy in some of the main cities. However, it doesn't take long to get out into rough and rural village roads. Travel in Uganda can take a lot longer than in the U.S.A. because of the immense traffic on the highways and in the cities. When I travel long distances I perfer to leave a day early to account for traffic and delays.

How do people get around?:

People get around in many ways in Uganda. Uganda is only 25% bigger than Nebraska but has roughly 40 million more people. This makes the country very busy! People use cars, buses, boats, motorcycles, taxis and bicycles to get around. Uganda is next to the third biggest lake in the world, and in this lake there are many islands made accessible by boats and ferries.

Taxi and bus parks are where I go to get on a bus or car that is going where I want. At the big taxi parks, like the old taxi park in Kampala, the cities capital, you can find a taxi to get anywhere in the country.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

It was a lot of fun using public forms of transportation. Taxis, usually a marked white van, have three rows that are used to squeeze as many people as possible. On my first taxi I felt pretty squished, but it has gotten easier the more and more I’ve done it.
