Happy Birthday in Spain!

Introduction:

Birthday celebrations are important events in Spain, just like in the United States. People gather together and sing their version of happy birthday with their own cultural twist.

What tradition did I learn about?:

During my stay here, I have learned about birthday celebrations in Spain. While the celebrations are similar to what they are back home, there are some differences. People gather together and sing Feliz Cumpleaños, the Spanish version of "Happy Birthday". As in the U.S., there is a tradition in Spain of giving presents and cards. However, the gifts in Spain tend to be more personal. It is the thought that counts. I've also learned that birthdays in Spain are not usually celebrated home. Instead, they are celebrated at parks, restaurants or other exciting places.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Spaniards are very social people and love celebrations. Family is very important to Spanish people, and everyone’s birthday is a great event to celebrate, often with a large group of people.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition is connected to its environment because Spanish people take the time to gather in the community, whether that be at someone's home or a restaurant or even in the park.
