Traveling with Trains!

Introduction:

This may sound like an obvious point, but when starting a year abroad, one of the first things you have to figure out is how to get around. In a small city like Trier, it’s easy to walk from place to place. But what if I want to travel to different German cities?,Do I need to buy a car? It turns out there is a much easier (and cheaper!) way to move around the country.

How do people get around?:

Because the city of Trier is relatively small, people mostly either ride bikes, walk or take the bus. I take the bus every day to school and have started to recognize most of the faces on my morning commute. But if you want to travel from city to city in Germany, the main way is by train. Trains are extremely common in Europe, but especially in Germany. Although many Germans have cars, people don’t drive in Germany as much as they do in the United States. This is because trains are reliable, cheap and (if you ask me) really fun!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

Actually, I have to admit that I LOVE traveling by train. At first, it was a bit daunting--train stations can be big and hectic, with lots of people running around trying to make it to their destination on time. But once you get the hang of finding where to go, I love settling into my seat and watching the world go by the window.
