Flammkuchen: German, French, or Both?

Introduction:

Although some people call it simply “German pizza,” Flammkuchen is a lot more complicated than that! After walking past a Flammkuchen restaurant every day on my way home from school, I finally sat down and tried this dish for myself. When I read more about this delicious food, I discovered it’s a pretty interesting local creation!

What food did I try?:

Flammkuchen! It’s a traditional dish of the region that looks a little like pizza but doesn’t really taste like it. Typically, Flammkuchen is a crust topped with bacon bits, chopped onions, lots of garlic and something called creme fraiche (which is creamy, cheese-like stuff!) Think pizza but with a super thin crust, a different type of cheese and no sauce.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

HAPPY! I had walked by this restaurant with Flammkuchen many times, and the cooking always smelled delicious! Also, when I ordered the Flammkuchen, I assumed I would just get a slice. I was shocked (and excited) when they gave me a WHOLE FLAMMKUCHEN all to myself! I tried my best to finish it, but had to take some home for leftovers.
