Tidying Up: How Does Paris Stay so Clean?

Introduction:

Where’s the bin? How does Paris manage its garbage? As a densely packed city, Paris needs an efficient waste management system to keep the streets clean and healthy.

What community need did I learn about?:

In heavily populated areas, like cities, waste management is very important to the health of the community. By maintaining clean streets, residents are happier and healthier. Thanks to these services, public spaces like parks are ready to welcome visitors and are less likely to have problems with animals looking for food in trash cans.

Why does the community have this need?:

Almost everything you can buy is sold in some sort of packaging: chips come in a bag, water comes in a bottle, tissues come in a box. Imagine all the tourists in Paris buy one item. All of that packaging needs to go somewhere! By providing trash cans and bins, the city helps to keep this rubbish out of parks, rivers and metro stations.

Is this need being met? How?:

Yes! Public garbage cans along the street and in parks are emptied at least once per day by street maintenance workers who throw the bags into their trucks. Household garbage is sorted by material, usually into three bins: glass, plastic and cardboard and rubbish.
