Bunun Ear-Shooting

Introduction:

Taiwan is home to sixteen different aboriginal tribes that were here before any other people came and colonized Taiwan. The east coast of Taiwan, where I live, has the highest population of aboriginal people, and I am lucky enough to be a part of amazing events throughout the year. One group in my area which has been very welcoming has been the local Bunun Tribe. They are known for their strength, endurance and skills in nature.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Many different cultures have all sorts of cool and crazy ways to show that a kid has become an adult or that a girl has become a woman or that a boy has become a man. The Bunun Tribe of eastern Taiwan is no exception. Once a year, they hold what is called "Ear-Shooting Festival". It is not a human ear they shoot or any random animal ear they shoot, but rather, it is specifically a pig's ear. They no longer shoot an actual pig ear on a live pig, but they still carry out the festivities that are included in the event and practice their archery skills.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Even though the tradition has changed over time, the tribe never forgets the true meaning of the festival. The Ear-Shooting Festival is the time where boys prove they are ready to be men.
