Scooter Safety

Introduction:

Scooter safety is an important part of making sure you are able to fully enjoy the beauty of Taiwan!

What community need did I learn about?:

Motor-vehicle safety! Both in the United States and Taiwan, motor-vehicle safety is a concern. Here in Taiwan, the biggest safety issues come from those on scooters. I myself have a scooter, and it is a load of fun. I always make sure to wear a helmet, stay in the designated scooter lanes, and go the speed limit. However, the biggest problem I have seen is that so many people go around without them on, whether an older person going to the market or one of my own students getting picked up from school!

Why does the community have this need?:

Here in my country town of Guanshan, there is minimal traffic and people traveling here are mainly locals. This has created a more relaxed environment than those seen in cities. Life here also moves at a much slower pace. This has led to a more relaxed view of the rules and laws that are put in place. There are people who scooter every day without helmets who will never receive a ticket. However, my friend who teaches in the city has actually been given a ticket for not wearing one! (He wasn't wearing one because he forgot it on the train.)

Is this need being met? How?:

The need for safety is not entirely being met.
