Halloween in Spain

Introduction:

What did you do for Halloween? Did you wear a costume and go trick-or-treating? Did you celebrate in school?

Did you know that Halloween is a tradition that started in the United States? Spain used to not celebrate Halloween. They really just started celebrating Halloween a few years ago, as it has become more and more popular on television shows. Television shows from the U.S. are shown all over the world! Sometimes they record the voices in another language so children can understand them, but the shows and the plot are still the same. Children here have been watching shows in which the characters celebrate Halloween and it's beginning to catch on here!

What tradition did I learn about?:

Every student at my school had heard of Halloween before, but only a handful celebrate it. All week, I made lessons teaching the students Halloween related vocabulary like vampire, ghost and pumpkin. I showed them pictures of Halloween costumes, and we did some arts and crafts projects in which students made little costumes like masks and crowns. I told them about trick or treating and haunted houses. They do not go trick or treating here! Sometimes they dress in costumes and go to a party, but there were no trick or treaters out on the local streets!
