The Claddagh Ring

Introduction:

The Claddagh ring is an Irish tradition representing love, loyalty and friendship. The ring is made of a heart topped with a crown and hands holding the heart. The hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty. The ring is made in the western region of Ireland near Galway.

What tradition did I learn about?:

In Ireland, the way you wear a Claddagh ring will signal whether you're single or taken. If the Claddagh ring is worn on the right hand with the point of the heart facing toward the fingertips, this means the wearer is single and might be looking for love. If worn on the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist, this means the person is in a relationship. If worn on the ring finger with the point of the heart toward the fingertips, this means the person is engaged. Lastly, if worn on the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the wrist, this means the person is married.

Although the tradition is quite dated, it is very common for Irish people to notice if and how you are wearing your Claddagh ring.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Richard Joyce, a silversmith from Galway in the 1700s, was said to have invented the Claddagh design.
