In much of southern Italy, it's difficult to get places without a car. Since I'm not an Italian citizen, it would be very difficult to get a car or driver's license while I'm here! Luckily, there are several other ways to get around in Calabria, even if they take more time or don't take me to all of the places I would like to see. In other parts of the country, especially big cities or wealthier areas, there are more busses, trams and trains. Even though there aren't very many buses or trains, they are crucial to life and travel in this area. I take the bus everyday to and from school, and so do many of my students and some other teachers!
There are four main ways of traveling in my area: Cars, buses, trains and by foot! I mostly use the bus system or I walk. My school is in a nearby town, so I take the bus there. I walk often, usually to the grocery store, other stores nearby and along the beach just for fun. I walk to the bus stop too! Walking can be really nice when the weather is warm and calm. Somedays it can be a little stressful to walk everywhere when it is storming really hard.
There is no public bus system in Calabria outside of the biggest cities, so the system I use is technically a private bus line. It expands far beyond this region.
