Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week I traveled to a city called Mérida, to a national preserve called Chichén Itzá, to a town called Izamal, back to Mérida, and finally back to Chetumal! This makes up a trip of about 648 miles!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

So far, coming from Chicago —> México City —> Chetumal —> plus small trips around the Yucatán Peninsula, I have traveled around 3000 miles!

How did I get around this week?:

Chetumal is a small city, pretty far away from the center of México. Because of this, the airport is very small (with only one gate to fly in and out of), so most people travel around the city in taxi or bike, and they travel across the state or peninsula on a bus. My bus ride this weekend from Chetumal to Mérida was around six hours long, but luckily there were movies and a bathroom on the bus!

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

This week I got to see a lot of cool new places, but my favorite by far was the town called Izamal. Izamal is famously known in México as the Yellow Town, because almost every building is painted a bright, warm yellow color. There are many ideas about why it was painted yellow, but my favorite is that the color actually repels mosquitos!
