With the proper amount of sunscreen and water, every day in Chetumal is an ideal beach vacation! This past week the temperature stayed around 86-90° Fahrenheit with high humidity. Although walking outside in the morning sometimes feels like you are walking into a shower, the humidity (water in the air) helps hold the smells of the native flowers for longer. It's sweaty outside, but it still smells good!
Chetumal is full of lizards and iguanas, big and small, but my favorite from this week was a small gecko (the turnip-tailed gecko) that I spotted while I was taking a nap near the bay. On a mangrove tree branch that I was resting underneath, the well-disguised brown and yellow reptile snuck right up under my nose— or right on top of my nose! It was about two inches long, bumpy and used sticky pads on its legs to move quickly across the tree and hang upside down on branches and leaves.
