The Day in the Life of Moroccan Kids

The schools are very rigorous in this country and teachers still can hit their students for acting up or not doing their homework.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

After school, many students go to a Youth Center to further their language skills. They sometimes go to school for up to 12 hours a day. Often times, the boys play a lot of soccer with their friends, while the girls usually just hang out with friends. Boys and girls oftentimes do not hang out on their own here.

Who is your favorite famous person?:

The biggest star in Morocco is Saad Lamjared, a very famous singer. He is like the Drake of Morocco. You can hear his music everywhere!

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

Kids listen to a lot of American music as well as French and Arabic music. The students that I teach really like K-pop.

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

My student Omar says that when he grows up, he wants to be a doctor so that he can help out people from his village. The people in rural communities do not have hospitals like the people who live in the city. He wants to become a doctor so that he can help change this.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?:

When I talked with my student Omar, he said that if he could go anywhere in the world, it would be New York City, so that he may go to University there. I told him that California is much better, but he said that he didn't care!

What do you know or think about the United States?:

When talking to kids about America, they highlight the people of America and not the politics.
