Women Lighting the World

Introduction:

In many cities, there are people that live in improvised areas because they cannot afford formal housing. Often, these communities are crowded and lack sanitation standards, and most lack access to electricity, too.

What community need did I learn about?:

My fieldwork takes the shape of community visits to different informal settlements to talk with women. The women I visit live in unelectrified areas.  Unelectrified means they have no access to light. Women have to cook in the dark. Children can’t read or do homework because they simply can’t see.

Can you imagine living in complete darkness once the sun goes down? What would that be like?

Why does the community have this need?:

Many of these people are living on land that is not their own. Sometimes people are only living there temporarily. This means that they will certain services that come with land ownership. Looking from a broader perspective, the world is sometimes an unjust place, so people don’t always have access to basic needs such as electricity and clean water.
