I also have classmates working with a group called Saahas Zero Waste, which collects waste from large companies and sorts it at a material reclamation facility. Sahaas was one of the first organizations formed in Bangalore to collect trash. It has seen the system greatly improve over the past few decades!
Some of my peers are also learning from an amazing organization called The Ugly Indian, which cleans public litter. The Ugly Indian removes litter from public spaces and creates beautiful murals to prevent littering. They have shown us that art can motivate people to help keep their city clean.
India Public Health, or IPH, works on road safety and has taught four of my classmates about the dangers of roadways here. Imagine if many intersections did not have traffic lights, and cars weaved in between lanes! That is what traffic can be like here.
Some of the students have worked with Biome, an organization that helps schools collect rainwater. Biome installs gutters and tanks at school buildings and helps well diggers build new wells for rainwater collection!
While some students are bringing water to schools, some of my classmates are working with schools as mentors! Parikrma (pronounced "Pah-rik-rim-mah") is a school organization that provides low-income families with a great school option and healthy breakfasts and lunches for students. These classmates have spent lots of time learning from elementary school students the same age as you!
Finally, some of my peers are working with Buda Folklore to learn about life outside of the city in rural India, along the coast and in the hills.
