Ramadan

Introduction:

Ramadan is an Islamic holiday that happens every year during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. For one month, any adult Muslims who are able to will fast from dawn until dusk. This means that they will not eat any foods or drink any water. In addition to the month of Ramadan, there are other times throughout the year that Muslims will fast. Some Muslims will choose to fast on Mondays and/or Thursdays. During these days, they will wake up before the sun rises and eat their first meal. Once the sun rises, they will stop eating until the sun sets. At this time, they will buka puasa or break their fast. People will gather together and eat, and after eating, Muslims will pray.

I have been told that during the month of Ramadan, there are many Pasar Ramadan, or Ramadan markets, that fill the streets with delicious foods for people to eat when they break their fasts. I'm very excited to experience this with my friends in Indonesia!

What tradition did I learn about?:

I have been learning about this tradition since I arrived in Indonesia because people really look forward to the celebration. People have told me many stories, and I have also read some articles online to get a better understanding of what will happen.
