The Birthday of Moscow

Introduction:

Since I have been in Russia, there has been only one holiday, and it happened on my first couple days within the city. It was Moscow's birthday, and the city center was filled with parades. There were all kinds of dances from different groups. Some were dressed up as dolphins, others as robots and I got a video of some scooter trick that were being performed at Red Square! There were some special festivities at Red Square that I was not allowed to see, but I made a Russian friend that day who took me to see some fireworks I did not know about beforehand. As a side note, Russians really love fireworks. I have seen them at least five times since I have been here. After my friend took me to see the fireworks, we went to the parades downtown and then to a restaurant to watch an M.M.A. match between an American and a Russian (how awkward!). The Russian ended up winning, and even though I felt out of place for being in a packed building with Russians screaming for their fellow comrade to beat the American, they overheard me talking with my friend and told me they respect me for learning the language. It was quite the fitting end to the Birthday of Moscow.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about the birthday of Moscow. I don't remember celebrating the birthday of Chicago, but Moscow is 872 years old, so every birthday is quite significant!
