Konkani is the official language of Goa. It is native to this region and uses the Devanagari script. Hindi is widely spoken as it is a primary government language across India. While Hindi has its roots in the North, many people speak it as a common language throughout the country. Marathi is the native language of Maharashtra, the neighboring state which sits above Goa on the map. Due to lots of domestic movement, many people here speak Marathi as well. Many domestic migrants come to Goa for the tourist season from Karnataka, where the primary language is Kannada. English is widely spoken, as well, due to lots of out-migration from Goa to Europe and the heavy tourist presence that comes to Goa throughout the year. It is also common for me to see signs in Russian and hear Russian spoken on the streets as so many international tourists come to establish their lives in Goa. While I don't regularly hear Portuguese, several people native to Goa have shared that they speak bits of Portuguese due to their parents or grandparents attending Portuguese medium schools.
The Indian Rupee is used here. While the exchange rate fluctuates a lot, as I'm writing this, one U.S. Dollar is the equivalent of 95.98 Indian Rupees.
