Two Young Quiteños

Introduction:

Quiteño (Key-ten-yo) is the Spanish word for somebody who was born in or is living in Quito, Ecuador's capital city. We have words like this in English, such as a "New Yorker" for somebody from New York or a "Seattleite" for somebody from Seattle. We also use even more local nicknames, such as Bellingham, Washington's "Bellinghamsters". Quito is a big city, with nearly three million inhabitants. Focusing on just two Quiteños gives just a tiny perspective, but I really wanted to see what student life is like here. At the ripe age of 24, I can confidently say that being a young college student is a period in your life like no other. You're an adult, but you're only just starting to learn how to do adult things. You're independent, but you still need support. Maybe you work. You definitely learn. Everything seems to change. I sat down with Jeremías and Andrea to see what this time period has been like for them.

What is your full name?:

My interviewees were Jeremías Damian Moreira Moncayo, an 18-year old boy, and Andrea de Jesús Rondal Velasco, a 22-year old girl.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

In Ecuador, it is very common for young people to live with their families well into adulthood. Andrea lives in a really small apartment in Quito, with her mom and two sisters.
