Living in a Big City

Almost everything in the city in translated into the two languages of French and Flemish, which makes Brussels a very inclusive and interesting place.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

People like to live in Brussels because it is geographically close to many other countries in Europe. When you live in Brussels, you are able to visit other countries using a variety of public transportation options. It is also a very lively city. There are always festivals and events happening. Now that December is approaching, Christmas markets will be all around! Besides its location, Brussels status as the "capital of Europe" means it can offer things like state-of-the-art waste removal and very good health insurance, which allows people to be covered by the government in case of health issues. Overall, the city is very environmentally-friendly, and less pollution means a safer and healthier place to live. People pay attention to waste collection, so waste management is great here. Public transport is also highly promoted by the government, so it's cheap and efficient. Vegetarianism is being promoted a lot, too, especially in the city of Ghent. It's a very welcoming country as well, because Belgium is an advocate of equal rights and has a strong lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) community.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

In general, Brussels deals with many of the challenges other big cities around the world face. The weather can be quite a problem. It rains a lot, and it can be very cold here, so people have had to adapt to living in a colder environment for at least part of the year.
