The Laeken Fireworks

Introduction:

Laeken is the name of a community in Brussels. Within Laeken is the famous structure known as the Atomium. The city has established the tradition of putting on a fireworks performance by the Atomium on Fridays throughout the summer.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about the Fireworks of Laeken. Typically, it is a free public event where families and people from all around the city are able to gather. Throughout the event, there is food being sold, music being performed by artists and waffle trucks selling delicious snacks. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. and local families, Belgians and passing tourists are able to come together to walk around and enjoy the different activities. There are also dances, workshops and games during the event. At around 11:00 p.m. the fireworks begin.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The event happens in July and August and is done in honor of the diversity and multiculturalism in the city of Brussels. Multiculturalism means that the city appreciates all of the cultures and ethnicities that it has. Brussels is a small city, but there are people from all over the world that live here. For example, there are people from Rwanda, Turkey, Greece, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Dominican Republic and many more countries.
