Peru's Environment

Fishing ports are also where people get their food from. For example, Ceviche, a popular Peruvian dish is made from the fish that is abundant in the ocean. This abundance is why seafood is found everywhere in and arround Lima, due to the city's proximity to the shore.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Lima, while beautifully situated next to the Pacific Ocean, is also located in the Pacific Ocean Ring of Fire. This means that the city is surrounded by volcanoes and has frequent earthquakes. Earthquakes are not predictable, so people have to be ready any time of day. Since I have been here, I have felt two small but significant earthquakes; and while I have been scared, the locals have not! Tsunamis are a real danger here too, and the evacuation signs can be seen along the coast.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

One thing that people have had to adapt to here is earthquakes. Earthquakes can happen at any time of the day or night. What I have noticed is that people have their evacuation route ready: they know where to go if a large quake happens. They also have a backpack just in case they need to leave their house. In the streets, there is a large S with a circle arround it so that people know where it is safe to stand during a large earthquake.
