Turning Trash into Treasure with AnuLife

Why does the community have this need?:

AnuLife is situated deep in the slum. Right outside the AnuLife headquarters there's a huge heap of trash. AnuLife's placement is strategic. Women living in the slums are the main driving force of the organization. Their work fuels the entire project, so having the place at the heart of Janakiram Layout made perfect sense. Furthermore, being beside all that garbage is great considering the work they do.

To put it simply, AnuLife makes bags out of empty juiceboxes. Women and mothers living in the slums often don't have reliable support from their husbands and struggle to find work because of their children. AnuLife gives these women an opportunity to make some money and help the local environment at the very same time.

Is this need being met? How?:

The women of AnuLife clean the juiceboxes, cut them into strips and then weave them into bags that can be sold for money. The juiceboxes aren't hard to come by. The waste in the slum provides them with the materials they need to make the bags. With a little bit of training, everyone is able to contribute.

Many of these women often work while their children are at school. AnuLife also acts as a temporary refuge for some of these women who may not feel safe or comfortable in their home. The organization keeps its doors open all the time to suit whatever schedule someone may have. I've seen kids at AnuLife every now and then as well.

The bags are sold a number of ways, and AnuLife is always looking for more vendors and stores that are willing to sell their bags. I helped my classmates sell bags at a street market last month.

AnuLife is still in development.
