Never the Same Way

Introduction:

The roads of India are like an unpredictable arena of obstacles that change throughout the day! Walking has been my most used form of transportation, but it doesn't work for everything. Depending on where I'm going and the time of day, a single commute involves planning and foresight.

How do people get around?:

It's difficult to say how most people get around here. There are many different popular modes of transportation. The reasons why people pick one over another may depend on their individual financial situations, but I don't know for sure. From what I've seen, most people get around on their personal motorbike or compact car. Wealthier Indians generally have their own vehicles. For everyone else, buses, rickshaws and Ubers seem to be the way to go. Buses are the cheapest form of transportation at around five rupees a ride, while Ubers and rickshaws cost more.

Every one of these modes of transportation have their advantages and drawbacks. Buses are cheap and frequent, but they spend a lot of time stuck in heavy traffic. Traffic is a huge problem in Bengaluru. It gets so bad that traffic will quite literally not move at all for hours. Indian drivers are opportunistic on the road. If they see an opening between two cars, they try to pass and sometimes get stuck. Buses are the first to get stuck in traffic jams and the last to get out.
