Being a Kid in China

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Many of the kids I asked either walk or ride a bike to school by themselves.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

They eat lunch in the school cafeteria or go back home to make lunch. This is possible because schools in China give students a two hour lunch break from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM. Most of students I spoke with didn't have a favorite food in mind, but said that if they had to choose one, it would be KFC chicken!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Mandarin Chinese is spoken at school, although many of the kids also speak Nanjing dialect at home with their parents. "Hello" in Chinese is ni hao.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

There aren't many names that come to mind. First names can be extremely diverse, with any combination of one or two Chinese characters. Last names, however, are a little less diverse. The most common last names are Li, Wang and Liu.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

The kids study subjects like English, history, math, science and literature. Most of them have differing opinions on what their favorite subject is but most enjoy literature or science.

What is your homework like?:

Homework consists of worksheets and handwritten essay reports. Those essay reports have to be presented in front of the class.
