Being a Kid in China

The porridge is rice-based and can have a whole range of ingredients added. Many of the kids' favorite porridge is the thousand-year egg porridge which includes a preserved, salted egg that has turned black in color from the preservation process. Since it is salty, it makes for a good ingredient to add into rice porridge.

What is your house like?:

One of the kids said his house is a relatively nice apartment and not too far from Nanjing University. Since I attend university and am pretty familiar with the surrounding area, I asked what he thinks of it. He said that although the apartment is on the smaller side, it is cozy and allows him to exercise a bit every time he comes home. Much of this area consists of older buildings, so there is no elevator. Besides that, the house is pretty standard with a bathroom, kitchen and two rooms: one for him and one for his parents.

What chores do you have at home?:

The chores kids here have at home include washing the dishes after dinner and mopping the floors. When they're not at school, most kids try to help out at home whenever they can.

What jobs do your parents have?:

One of the kids that I interviewed said that her father runs a small grocery store and her mother is a teacher. A few others chimed in that their parents have jobs like taxi drivers and store employees.
