Flooding and Communities in the Netherlands

Majority of the flood control is done via dikes. Dikes have been around in the Netherlands for hundreds of years. A dike, also known as a levee or floodbank, is a ridge or artificially constructed wall that can be used to regulate water levels. The dikes confine the flow of the river to one area, so that the water cannot splash higher than what cities can handle. Furthermore, it is common for people to be moved from areas of extremely low elevation to areas of higher elevation to protect them.
