Bienvenidos a Cali, Colombia!

Then the always-joyful server brings us the main plate, which has a different meat every week served with rice, beans, mashed potatoes, salad and patacón (fried plantain in the shape of a pancake). This week’s meat was galantina de carne which is actually a mix of three different meats. That’s a triple win in my book. I can't wait for next Sunday!

What music did I listen to this week?:

I'm glad you asked. Cali is considered the salsa music capital of the world! They don't just put salsa on the radio. I am constantly greeted with live salsa being performed anywhere from restaurants to grocery stores. That's right, it's not uncommon to enter the grocery store for a few things and end up with a nice complimentary concert.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

The most fun activity this week was when I saw a live stand-up comedy act in a park. Every weekend, the barrio (neighborhood) San Antonio in Cali has cuenteros (storytellers) who set up a spot in this big public park to do their show. The performer asked for a lot of audience participation and it was funny to see people surprised when they were asked to come up. It was also really nice to see this local tradition that doesn't exist where I'm from, where strangers come together to enjoy a show in the park.

What did I read this week?:

This week I decided something was missing from my life: a novel. I'm usually reading a novel and I realized I hadn't read for fun since arriving in Colombia.
